STA ANA -- "We do not encourage gambling what we encourage is for the people to have employment or livelihood."
This was the reaction of Presidential Spokesperson for Central Luzon Lorelei Fajardo about the recent declaration of Former President Joseph Estrada favoring the legalizaion of jueteng.
Fajardo pointed out that it is within the authority of congress, whether to legalize or not to legalize Jueteng "Let's give it first to our lawmakers, alam ninyo kung illegal dapat alisin o eradicate natin," she said.
According to Fajardo, there are alredy existing similar number games which are considered legal and under the management of the Phillipine Amusement and Gaming Corporation and Philippine Charity Sweeptakes Office.
It can be recalled that Estrada earlier said that he is in favor of legalizing the illegal numbers game “jueteng” to help ease the plight of the poor, particularly those who depend on it for a living.
The former president said he has been against the illegal numbers game especially during his 17 years in public office but he has changed his mind when he saw that many people, particularly in depressed areas of the country, would be affected if it was eradicated.
Catholic bishops have slammed Estrada for voicing a plan to legalize jueteng if he gets elected.
